Enoc Perez - Drawing = Risk

September 18 - October 25, 2021

Enoc Perez is a critically acclaimed multidisciplinary artist living and working in New York City. The artist moved to New York in 1986 where he completed a B.F.A. at Pratt Institute and then received an M.F.A. in Fine Art, from Hunter College. Perez often looks at the relationships between power and permanence. These notions extend to his paintings and drawings of architectural sites, artist studios, domestic interiors, celebrity culture, and collage. Perez's artworks are included in the collections of major museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; The British Museum, London; Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven; New York Public Library; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington DC; and The Museum of Contemporary Art, San Juan, Puerto Rico. He has also exhibited extensively throughout the United States and abroad, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art; Corcoran Art Gallery, Washington D.C.; Museum of Contemporary Art, North Miami; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia; Museum of Contemporary Art, San Juan; Centre Pompidou, Paris; and the British Museum, London.

Bill Arning Exhibitions has curated a selection based on the salient place of drawings in the genesis of his artworks. Drawing has always been central to Perez's studio practice and his methodology for making his celebrated paintings continues to rely on drawing-like mark making and pigment transfer techniques.  He remains a compulsive consumer of images, processing visual culture at an alarming rate and using his trademark hand to create a visual universe that is uniquely his own. While the two thematics he is best known for architecture and women are both in evidence in these fourteen classic drawings, celebrities as different as Beyonce, Gena Rowlands and Truman Capote, spar with UFOs, tigers and the Unabomber's shack.
